WPE-DK UHPC TopLayer® Flooring for Military Infrastructure

WPE-DK UHPC TopLayer® is a mineral high-performance flooring system based on Ultra-High Performance Concrete. The system has been developed for areas where standard concrete, industrial coatings or conventional screeds quickly reach their limits under high mechanical, chemical and thermal stress. Typical applications include armoured vehicle workshops, aircraft hangars, vehicle halls, ammunition and technical depots, battery rooms, decontamination areas, port workshops and military logistics buildings.

The technology is based on a very dense UHPC matrix with high compressive strength, high abrasion resistance and very low liquid absorption. The result is not a thin plastic coating, but a solid mineral wearing and protection layer. Depending on the required performance, WPE-DK UHPC TopLayer® can be used as a thin rehabilitation layer, as a high-strength industrial floor or as an integrated part of a new floor structure. The layer thickness is defined project-specifically and depends on the substrate, wheel loads, point loads, chemical exposure and required service life.

Installation begins with the assessment of the existing substrate. In new construction projects, the load-bearing concrete slab is properly prepared, levelled and tested for load-bearing capacity, moisture and bond strength. In rehabilitation projects, damaged concrete areas, loose particles, oil contamination and weak zones are removed. Mechanical surface preparation then follows, for example by shot blasting, milling or grinding. Afterwards, UHPC TopLayer® is freshly mixed, applied, distributed and levelled to the required flatness. Depending on the system, the surface can be smoothed, textured or finished with anti-slip properties. Controlled curing is important to prevent early drying, shrinkage stresses and loss of strength.

For new military construction projects, WPE-DK UHPC TopLayer® offers the advantage that floor areas can be designed from the beginning for real military loads. Heavy wheeled vehicles, tracked vehicles with protective pads, lifting equipment, workshop cranes, tool trolleys, oil collection systems and cleaning machines generate loads that often exceed the long-term capacity of conventional industrial floors. The dense UHPC layer reduces abrasion, edge spalling, liquid ingress and surface damage. This creates low-maintenance, easy-to-clean and long-lasting surfaces.

For rehabilitation projects, the major advantage is the technical upgrading of existing floors. Many military halls still have load-bearing concrete slabs, while the surface is damaged by oil, impact, abrasion or chemical cleaning. WPE-DK UHPC TopLayer® can upgrade such surfaces without requiring the complete replacement of the entire floor slab. This reduces construction time, closure periods and operational interruptions.

The system is also suitable for different temperature zones. In hot climates, the mineral UHPC surface supports high dimensional stability and resistance against heat, tyre abrasion and intensive cleaning. In cold regions, the dense structure can reduce the ingress of water, salts and de-icing agents. In maritime or tropical climates, the low porosity offers advantages against moisture, chlorides and corrosive operating environments.

WPE-DK UHPC TopLayer® is therefore not a decorative floor covering, but a technical wearing and protection layer for military infrastructure. Its key benefit lies in higher load capacity, reduced maintenance, improved cleanability and higher operational availability of military buildings and workshop areas.
