Use and Production of UHPC Precast Concrete Elements under Extreme Cold Conditions in Alaska and Greenland

Alaska and Greenland place exceptional demands on infrastructure components. Extreme sub-zero temperatures, freeze-thaw cycles, snow, ice, de-icing salts, coastal climate, short construction seasons and remote project locations place severe stress on bridges, roads, ports, airports, energy facilities and military infrastructure. Under these conditions, precast concrete elements made from WPE-DK UHPC can provide a high-performance alternative to standard concrete, especially where long durability, reduced element thickness, fast installation and lower maintenance requirements are essential.

WPE-DK UHPC precast elements are particularly suitable for bridge caps, edge beams, deck panels, transition slabs, ramps, port slabs, quay edges, ferry terminals, airfield service areas, foundation slabs, cable channels, protective walls and modular repair elements. Due to its very dense matrix, high compressive and flexural strength, low water absorption and strong resistance to frost, de-icing salts and abrasion, WPE-DK UHPC elements can provide a longer service life than conventional precast concrete elements in critical exposure zones. This is especially important in regions with short repair windows: prefabricated components can be installed quickly and help reduce downtime for roads, bridges, ports and airfields.

Another strategic advantage lies in local or regional production. Instead of transporting heavy standard concrete elements over long distances to Alaska or Greenland, WPE-DK UHPC binders, fibers, additives, mix designs and technical know-how can be supplied. Suitable local sands and aggregates can be incorporated after proper testing. This can reduce transport volume, logistics costs and construction time. At the same time, local precast concrete manufacturers gain access to a high-value new product segment for Arctic infrastructure projects.

However, production under extreme cold conditions requires a controlled manufacturing concept. UHPC should not be mixed, cast or cured unprotected at very low temperatures. Heated production areas, temperature-controlled raw materials, controlled mixing water temperature, suitable compulsory mixers, insulated formwork and controlled curing are required. Fresh concrete temperature, working time, fiber distribution, strength development and surface quality must be monitored consistently. Testing for freeze-thaw resistance, de-icing salt resistance, flexural strength, abrasion resistance, water absorption and chloride penetration is particularly important.

For Alaska and Greenland, WPE-DK UHPC should therefore not be marketed as a simple replacement for standard concrete, but as an ArcticGrade UHPC Precast System for critical infrastructure components. Its strongest application is where standard concrete is too heavy, too prone to cracking or too maintenance-intensive. With mobile or regional precast production concepts, WPE-DK UHPC can help repair Arctic infrastructure faster, build it more durably and reduce dependence on long supply chains.
