UHPC and High-Temperature Resistant UHPC for Canadian Military Infrastructure

Canada’s military infrastructure is exposed to some of the most demanding operational and environmental conditions in the world: Arctic cold, freeze-thaw cycles, de-icing salts, coastal chlorides, remote logistics, heavy vehicles, fuel exposure, fire risk and increasing requirements for resilient dual-use infrastructure. Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) offers a high-performance material platform for the construction, repair and protection of military facilities where long service life, reduced maintenance and operational reliability are essential.

WPE-DK UHPC can be used for airbase infrastructure, harbour and naval facilities, logistics areas, bridge components, modular protection elements, technical buildings, fuel and ammunition-related infrastructure, hardstand areas, blast-resistant panels, precast barriers and protective wall systems. Its dense matrix, high compressive strength and very low permeability make UHPC particularly suitable for structures exposed to frost, salt, water, abrasion and heavy-duty military traffic. In remote northern and Arctic locations, modular UHPC elements can reduce maintenance demand and support faster installation under limited construction windows.

A further strategic material category is high-temperature resistant UHPC. WPE-DK high-temperature UHPC systems can be developed for areas exposed to fire, heat, thermal shock or industrial temperature loads. Potential applications include fire-resistant protection layers, technical rooms, fuel infrastructure, tunnel and shelter components, battery and energy storage protection, engine test areas, maintenance facilities and protective linings in military industrial zones. Compared with standard concrete, high-temperature UHPC can provide greater structural density, improved resistance to thermal degradation and thinner protective sections, depending on the formulation and project requirements.

For the Canadian Armed Forces, UHPC should not be seen only as a stronger concrete, but as a resilient construction material for mission-critical infrastructure. It can support longer service life, reduced repair frequency, modular deployment, improved protection of key assets and better performance in cold, coastal and high-risk environments. The most relevant entry points are Arctic infrastructure, airfields, naval bases, bridge rehabilitation, logistics hubs, protective construction and high-temperature/fire-exposed facilities.
