High-temperature resistant WPE-DK UHPC for the steel industry

For an OEM in the steel industry, we were commissioned to conduct two tests before our WPE-DK UHPC HT concrete (compressive strength 170 MPa, flexural strength 16 MPa) would be used as wear protection for machine parts and areas near blast furnaces in a steel mill.

The objective was to evaluate how a WPE-DK UHPC lining would react to sudden exposure to hot gases exceeding 700 °C (1292 °F) for a duration of 10 to 15 minutes, followed by a reduction to the normal process temperature of approximately 300 °C (572 °F). In extreme cases, temperatures could temporarily rise to around 1000 °C (1832 °F), although such events are expected only three to four times per year.

We produced several WPE-DK UHPC HT panels with thicknesses of 25 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm, allowing them to air-dry only. After 48 hours, each panel was heated on one side with a burner to 750 °C (1382 °F) while continuously measuring the temperature on the opposite side. Tests were carried out both with and without an 8 mm thick high-performance insulation layer.

The results for the customer were clear: The heat transfer was so slow that the maximum temperature did not penetrate the 30 mm and 40 mm thick panels without insulation. For the insulated panels, the reverse side remained at room temperature even after 30 minutes of exposure.

Based on these results, the customer chose a 40 mm thick WPE-DK UHPC HT lining without additional insulation, combined with the use of standard-grade steel as the construction material.
